His Excellency, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State, today visited communities severely affected by recent flooding to personally assess the situation and offer solidarity to displaced residents.
The Governor, accompanied by top government officials and humanitarian teams, toured flood-ravaged areas in the northern and central parts of the state, where heavy rains have caused significant damage to homes, farmlands, and infrastructure, displacing hundreds of families.
Governor Otu expressed deep concern over the plight of the victims and assured them of the state government’s unwavering commitment to provide relief and long-term support. “My heart goes out to all families who have lost properties and livelihoods to this flood disaster,” he said. “We are here to listen, to comfort, and most importantly, to act. The Cross River State Government will not leave any victim behind.”
Key pledges made during the visit include: Immediate distribution of relief materials such as food, clean water, clothing, and temporary shelter for all displaced persons. Provision of medical support through mobile clinics and free healthcare services for flood-related illnesses. Rapid assessment and commencement of repair works on damaged roads, bridges, and public facilities.
Activation of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to coordinate ongoing rescue and recovery efforts in collaboration with federal agencies and humanitarian partners. Long-term measures to enhance flood resilience, including improved drainage systems and early warning mechanisms.
The Governor directed relevant ministries to fast-track the release of emergency funds and called on well-meaning individuals, corporate organizations, and development partners to support the state’s relief efforts.
“Flooding is a recurring challenge exacerbated by climate change, but with collective action and better preparedness, we can mitigate its impact on our people,” Governor Otu added. “This administration remains focused on building a resilient and prosperous Cross River State.”
Affected residents expressed gratitude for the Governor’s visit and prompt response. Relief distribution has already commenced in the hardest-hit communities.
The state government continues to monitor weather patterns and urges residents in flood-prone areas to heed official advisories and move to safer grounds where necessary.
