The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a strategic agreement with the Kingdom of Morocco to deploy advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered crop monitoring technologies aimed at revolutionizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector and bolstering food security.

The partnership, described as a major milestone in South-South cooperation, will leverage Morocco’s expertise in precision agriculture, satellite-based monitoring, and AI-driven early warning systems to help Nigerian farmers optimize yields, manage climate risks, and reduce post-harvest losses.

Under the agreement, the initiative will initially target 15 priority states across Nigeria’s key agricultural zones. These states will benefit from the rollout of AI tools for real-time crop health assessment, pest and disease detection, soil moisture analysis, and yield forecasting. The technology is expected to support smallholder farmers by providing actionable insights through mobile platforms and extension services.

Hon. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, [Insert Name], who led the Nigerian delegation, stated: “This collaboration with Morocco marks a transformative step in our efforts to modernize agriculture. By harnessing AI crop monitoring, we are equipping our farmers with cutting-edge tools to combat climate change, improve productivity, and achieve sustainable food security for our growing population. The targeting of 15 states ensures focused impact where it is needed most.”

The deal builds on existing bilateral ties between Nigeria and Morocco in agriculture, meteorology, and technology transfer, including prior cooperation on AI-based weather forecasting and early warning systems.

Moroccan officials highlighted the mutual benefits, noting that the partnership aligns with Morocco’s “Generation Green” strategy and Nigeria’s agricultural transformation agenda. “We are proud to share our advancements in smart farming with Nigeria. Together, we can build resilient agricultural systems across Africa,” said a senior Moroccan agriculture representative.

This initiative is projected to significantly boost crop productivity, reduce input costs for farmers, and contribute to Nigeria’s broader goals of food self-sufficiency and economic diversification. Implementation is set to commence in the coming months, with monitoring and evaluation frameworks in place to measure impact on yields and farmer livelihoods.
