The French Football Federation (FFF) has failed in its appeal against the yellow card issued to winger Michael Olise during France’s World Cup match, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee confirmed today.
Olise received a caution in the group stage encounter, which triggered an automatic one-match suspension risk for the knockout stages. The FFF promptly lodged an appeal, arguing that the booking was unjustified and should be overturned. However, after reviewing video evidence and match reports, FIFA upheld the referee’s decision.
The ruling means Olise will serve the suspension as per tournament regulations, missing France’s next fixture.
A statement from the French Football Federation expressed disappointment with the outcome: “We are naturally disappointed with FIFA’s decision to uphold the booking. We believed there was sufficient evidence to overturn what we considered a harsh caution. Michael has been in excellent form and we will now focus all our energy on supporting the team as they prepare for the next match without him.”
Michael Olise, who has been a standout performer for the French national team with his creativity and goal contributions, was unavailable for comment immediately after the announcement. The 24-year-old Crystal Palace and France star has quickly become an important squad member since committing to the senior national team.
France, one of the pre-tournament favourites, will now have to navigate the next round without the attacking midfielder’s services. Head Coach Didier Deschamps is expected to name his squad adjustments in the coming hours.
This decision highlights the strict application of disciplinary rules at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where appeals against bookings are rarely successful unless clear refereeing errors are proven.
