Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has called on all Lagosians to join the fight against climate change by actively planting and nurturing trees across the state.

Speaking during a tree-planting exercise to mark the state’s renewed environmental sustainability drive, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that individual and collective tree-planting efforts are critical to mitigating the impacts of rising temperatures, flooding, and air pollution in Africa’s largest city.

“Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is here with us in Lagos. From excessive rainfall and flooding to heatwaves and deteriorating air quality, we are already feeling its effects,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said. “The simple but powerful act of planting trees remains one of the most effective, affordable, and sustainable ways we can build resilience and create a greener, healthier Lagos for ourselves and future generations.”

The Governor noted that trees play a vital role in carbon sequestration, reducing urban heat islands, preventing soil erosion, and improving overall environmental health. He urged residents, schools, corporate organizations, market associations, and community groups to plant at least one tree per household or organization as part of the state’s “Green Lagos” initiative.

To support widespread participation, the Lagos State Government will continue to distribute free seedlings through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Local Government Areas, and designated distribution centers across the state. The government has also pledged to expand protected green spaces and enforce regulations against indiscriminate tree felling.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, who accompanied the Governor, reiterated the state’s commitment to achieving 10 million trees planted over the next few years.

“Lagosians must see tree planting not as a government project, but as a personal and civic responsibility,” Commissioner Wahab stated. “Every tree planted today is an investment in cleaner air, cooler neighborhoods, and a more sustainable megacity.”

The Governor warned that failure to act decisively on environmental issues would exacerbate existing challenges, particularly for vulnerable communities in coastal and low-lying areas.

All residents are encouraged to visit their local government councils or the Ministry of the Environment for seedlings and technical guidance on proper tree planting and maintenance.
