His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has officially declared Thursday, 16th July 2026, as the first day of Safar 1448 AH.

This declaration follows the non-sighting of the new crescent moon of Safar across Nigeria on Tuesday, 14th July 2026 (corresponding to the 29th day of Muharram 1448 AH). Muslims across the country are therefore urged to commence the month of Safar tomorrow, Thursday.

The Sultanate Council appeals to the Muslim Ummah to continue upholding the spirit of unity, piety, and peaceful coexistence that defines the Islamic faith. The Council also encourages Muslims to use the new month as an opportunity for increased acts of worship, reflection, and charity.

Safar is the second month in the Islamic lunar calendar. While not inherently sacred like the four forbidden months, it remains a significant period for Muslims to seek closeness to Allah and prepare for upcoming important dates in the Hijri year.

The general public, particularly Muslims, should take note of this announcement for the purpose of religious observances, planning, and scheduling.
