The Akwa Ibom State Government today announced a groundbreaking 10-year electricity reform plan aimed at revolutionizing the state's power sector and ensuring reliable, affordable electricity for all residents by 2034. The initiative, unveiled by Governor Umo Eno during the conclusion of the Akwa Ibom Electricity Summit, marks a significant step toward energy independence and sustainable development in the region.
Under the new plan, the state will leverage the recently enacted Akwa Ibom Electricity Policy 2024 and Electricity Law 2025 to establish a robust legal and regulatory framework. Key components include the rehabilitation and commercialization of the Ibom Power Company, the creation of the Akwa Ibom Electricity Regulatory Commission, and the development of an independent electricity market tailored to the state's needs.bbeffaaaa1d0 This reform roadmap is designed to address longstanding challenges in power generation, transmission, and distribution, while promoting private sector investment and renewable energy integration.
Governor Eno emphasized the urgency of the reforms, stating, "Electricity is not a luxury but a fundamental right for every citizen. Our 10-year plan will transform Akwa Ibom into a model of energy efficiency and reliability, driving economic growth and improving quality of life for our people.” The governor also highlighted ongoing queries into the underperformance of existing power assets and pledged decisive action to resolve the state's electricity supply crisis.
The Federal Government has expressed strong support for the initiative, with Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu assuring partnership to facilitate affordable and universal access to electricity. "We will work hand-in-hand with Akwa Ibom to develop an independent power market that benefits all Nigerians," Adelabu said during the summit.
Additional elements of the plan include incentives for renewable energy projects, infrastructure upgrades, and capacity building for local stakeholders. The state government anticipates that these reforms will attract significant investments, create jobs, and position Akwa Ibom as a leader in Nigeria's evolving energy landscape.
