The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that a devastating fire outbreak at Mandilas Market on Lagos Island resulted in the complete destruction of approximately 200 shops housed in four buildings, with one individual sustaining injuries from smoke inhalation.
The incident occurred between September 16 and 17, 2025, starting around 7:00 p.m. on the 16th due to a faulty changeover switch in one of the buildings. The fire spread rapidly to adjoining structures, exacerbated by the presence of highly flammable materials such as clothing, footwear, and plastics commonly found in the market.
Emergency responders, including the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) LRU, and other stakeholders, were swiftly mobilized to the scene. Through their combined efforts, the blaze was contained and fully extinguished overnight. The Nigeria Police Force provided security, cordoning off the area to prevent vandalism or looting.
The injured person is currently receiving medical attention at a nearby health facility. No fatalities were reported.
NEMA's Lagos Operations Office continues to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to provide support to the affected traders and to enhance safety awareness in densely populated commercial areas. "We urge all market operators and residents to prioritize fire safety measures, including regular maintenance of electrical systems and proper storage of flammable goods, to prevent such tragedies in the future," said a NEMA spokesperson.
NEMA remains committed to effective disaster management and response across Nigeria, working closely with federal, state, and local partners to mitigate risks and aid recovery.
