Governor Seyi Makinde has issued a clarion call to shift national attention from political theatrics to the pressing issue of hunger and economic hardship affecting millions of Nigerians. In his bi-monthly newsletter released Thursday, the Governor emphasized that while political analysts and media outlets remain fixated on defections between major parties, the real defection Nigerians are waiting for is that of hunger and poverty.

“For me, the only defection that truly matters is the one that has not happened yet — the defection of hunger,” Makinde wrote. “While people are busy changing parties, Nigerians are struggling to afford the necessities. Families are being forced to make impossible choices daily. These are the real issues, not political realignment.”

Governor Makinde’s statement comes at a time when the cost of living continues to soar, and basic commodities are increasingly out of reach for many households. He criticized the political class for what he described as a “distraction from urgent realities,” urging leaders to prioritize policies that alleviate poverty and restore dignity to citizens.

Governor Makinde reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and economic empowerment, citing ongoing initiatives in agriculture, education, and healthcare aimed at reducing poverty in Oyo State.
