The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo North Senatorial District has sharply criticized Senator Adams Oshiomhole for distributing grinding machines, motorcycles, sewing machines, and cash gifts as part of his constituency empowerment initiative. The party described the gesture as a “disgraceful reversal” of the senator’s earlier promises to reform constituency projects.
Speaking on Monday, PDP chieftain and former member of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Shegun Saiki, condemned the initiative, saying it reflects a lack of vision and seriousness in addressing the economic challenges facing constituents.
“It is like somebody vomiting and swallowing it back,” Saiki said. “What can anybody buy with ₦100,000 in this present economy? Oshiomhole only gave money to people that visited him.”
Saiki recalled that prior to his election to the National Assembly, Oshiomhole had pledged to restructure the way constituency projects are executed, promising more impactful and sustainable development. The PDP leader argued that the distribution of grinding machines and motorcycles falls short of that promise and fails to address the real needs of the youth and unemployed in the district.
“How are you empowering a young man in his 20s with a motorbike? That is more offensive than helpful,” Saiki added.
The PDP called on Senator Oshiomhole to revisit his campaign commitments and prioritize infrastructure, education, and job creation over tokenistic handouts. The party also urged constituents to demand accountability and transparency in the use of public funds allocated for constituency development.
In response, Senator Oshiomhole’s office defended the initiative as a practical step toward grassroots empowerment, stating that the items distributed were selected based on community feedback and immediate needs.
However, critics argue that such gestures are reminiscent of outdated political patronage and do little to foster long-term economic growth or self-sufficiency.
