Senator Osita Izunaso (Imo West) has issued a strong appeal to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, urging him to take decisive steps to stop uniformed airport officials from soliciting money from travelers at Nigeria’s airports. The Senator described the practice as “a disgrace to the nation” and warned that it undermines Nigeria’s global image.

Speaking at the “Responsible Communication: The Voice of the World” event in Abuja, held in anticipation of Nigeria’s hosting of the 2026 World Public Relations Forum, Senator Izunaso called out personnel from the Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, and other agencies for engaging in unprofessional conduct.

“It is shameful that some of our airport officials, who are meant to represent the dignity of our nation, are seen begging passengers for money. This must stop,” Izunaso stated.

The Senator emphasized that such behavior not only violates ethical standards but also discourages tourism and foreign investment. He urged Minister Keyamo to implement strict disciplinary measures and retraining programs to restore professionalism at Nigeria’s international gateways.

In response, Minister Keyamo acknowledged the issue and assured the public that his ministry, in collaboration with relevant agencies, is developing a comprehensive strategy to curb begging and extortion at airports. He pledged to unveil new policies aimed at improving conduct and accountability among airport staff.

“We are aware of the complaints and are working on practical steps to address them. Our airports must reflect the best of Nigeria,” Keyamo said during a press briefing.

The call for reform comes amid growing public frustration over misconduct by officials at major airports, including Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
