The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that vandals are responsible for the collapse of a major power transmission tower in Akwa Ibom State, resulting in significant electricity disruptions across multiple communities.
According to a statement released by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, Tower T35 along the Eket–Ikot Abasi 132kV Transmission Line collapsed on October 12, 2025, following deliberate acts of vandalism in Ete Community, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.
An inspection team from TCN’s Lines Department discovered that several structural components of the tower had been dismantled and carted away. The team also found signs of tampering on nearby towers T7, T33, and T34, raising concerns about further potential collapses.
As a result of the sabotage, bulk power supply to the Eket and Ekim 132/33kV Transmission Substations and the Ibom Power Station has been temporarily disrupted. The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company has also been affected, unable to off-take power for distribution to surrounding communities.
TCN has condemned the act and assured the public that efforts are underway to restore power and reinforce security around critical infrastructure. The company is working closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident and prevent future occurrences.
