The Government and people of Anambra State, alongside the family of Chief Willie Obiano, announce with deep sorrow the passing of the former Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano. He died in London, United Kingdom, on November 14, 2025, following complications from severe heart failure and urinary cancer.

Chief Obiano, born August 8, 1955, in Aguleri, Anambra State, served as the Governor of Anambra from March 2014 to March 2022. During his tenure, he was recognized for his efforts in infrastructure development, agricultural reforms, and security initiatives that shaped the state’s trajectory.

Family sources revealed that his health had been deteriorating for several months, but the final collapse came suddenly. Medical officials in London confirmed that he received intensive care and “fought till the very last moment.”

At the time of his passing, Chief Obiano was scheduled to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 25, 2025, in connection with an alleged ₦4 billion money laundering case filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The matter had recently been reassigned to Justice Mohammed Umar.

Chief Willie Obiano succeeded Peter Obi as Governor and left office in 2022 after completing two terms. His administration was marked by both achievements and controversies, reflecting the complex legacy of his leadership.
