The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed satisfaction with the Federal Government’s decision to suspend the controversial 15% import duty on petrol and diesel, describing the move as a vindication of its earlier warnings that the levy would exacerbate Nigeria’s economic challenges.
In a statement issued by Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC National Publicity Secretary, the party emphasized that the suspension validates its October 31 caution to the government that imposing fresh tariffs on imported fuel would deepen hardship already caused by subsidy removal, currency depreciation, and rising living costs.
The ADC reiterated its commitment to pro-people policies and urged the government to adopt a more consultative and consistent approach to economic management. According to Abdullahi, “This suspension is proof that our warnings were valid. Nigerians deserve stability, not constant policy flip flops that worsen their daily struggles.”
The party further called on the Federal Government to prioritize long-term solutions such as strengthening local refining capacity, stabilizing the naira, and addressing inflationary pressures, rather than relying on short-term fiscal measures that risk destabilizing the economy.
The ADC’s stance underscores its role as a watchdog for economic justice, ensuring that government policies reflect the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians. The suspension of the 15% fuel tariff is seen as a temporary relief, but the party insists that sustainable reforms are urgently needed to restore confidence and ease the burden on citizens.
