The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today issued a stern warning to politicians and interest groups. These entities plan coordinated campaigns of calumny to discredit the Commission and its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede. The EFCC detects these efforts as attempts to undermine its anti-corruption mandate.
Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, states in the announcement. He reveals that disgruntled politicians hire writers, academics, and activists.
These individuals spread false narratives about political bias in the Commission's operations. Oyewale explains, "The objective is to intimidate the EFCC into hesitating on investigations involving opposition figures."
The Commission monitors these activities closely. It vows to remain undeterred in its fight against corruption. Oyewale emphasizes that the EFCC operates without political alliances. The agency pursues cases based on merit, regardless of party affiliation.
Furthermore, the EFCC highlights ongoing probes and trials. These involve prominent members from both ruling and opposition parties. The Commission adheres strictly to its Establishment Act. It refuses to disclose details under pressure or make premature announcements.
Oyewale adds, "As the 2027 elections approach, such smear tactics will intensify. However the EFCC commits to justice without fear or favor." The agency calls on Nigerians to support its efforts. Public backing strengthens accountability and combats graft effectively.
The EFCC urges politicians to cease these discrediting attempts. Instead, they should focus on transparent governance. The Commission stands firm in its role to safeguard Nigeria's economic integrity.
