Olympique de Marseille (OM) is actively searching for a new head coach following the mutual agreement departure of Roberto De Zerbi earlier this week.
The Italian tactician left the club after a challenging period, including a heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, prompting the Ligue 1 side to accelerate its recruitment process for a successor.
Among the candidates under serious consideration is Éric Sékou Chelle, the current head coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles.
Multiple reports from French and international media, including L’Équipe and other sources, confirm that Chelle has been recommended through intermediaries and now features prominently on Marseille's shortlist.
The 48-year-old Franco-Malian coach brings a strong pedigree to the role. Chelle recently guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, showcasing his ability to deliver results on the international stage.
His dual nationality, professional playing experience in France, and growing reputation in both African and European football have made him an intriguing option for OM as they seek to stabilize the team ahead of the remainder of the season.
Chelle is joined on the shortlist by other notable names, including former Marseille captain and coach Habib Beye—who is reportedly a frontrunner—and Portuguese tactician Sérgio Conceição. While no formal approach has been made to Chelle at this stage, his name has gained significant traction amid Marseille's urgent need for a new leader.
Olympique de Marseille, under the ownership of American businessman Frank McCourt, is focused on appointing a coach capable of inspiring the squad, building on the club's proud history, and competing strongly in Ligue 1 and European competitions.
The club has not yet announced a timeline for the appointment but is moving swiftly to secure the right candidate.
