In a dramatic turn of events during the Senate Committee on Steel Development's budget defence session for the Ministry of Steel Development, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) walked out in protest against what she described as repeated disrespect and denial of her right to fully engage with the proceedings.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, amid extended deliberations that lasted nearly four hours.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, known for her rigorous scrutiny of issues affecting her constituency including the revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Company raised critical questions directed at the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Abubakar Audu.

Tensions escalated when the Committee Chairman, Senator Patrick Ndubueze (Imo North), moved to conclude the interactive session, citing that the senator had already contributed extensively. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan objected strongly, insisting she had vital additional points to raise with the minister.

In the heated exchange captured on video and widely shared across media platforms, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan pleaded: “Mr. Chairman, please don't hit the gavel.

I still have something to say, and I think you should respect me enough.” When the chairman proceeded, she responded firmly: “That is fine. You have disrespected me more than enough. No, you can’t do this to me.”

Refusing to accept the curtailment of her participation, the Kogi Central senator rose from her seat and exited the meeting room, underscoring her stance against what she perceived as an attempt to silence her voice in the presence of the minister and fellow committee members.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has consistently advocated for transparency, accountability, and meaningful representation in legislative processes, particularly on matters impacting industrial development and her constituents in Kogi State.

This walkout highlights ongoing concerns about fairness, speaking rights, and collegial respect within Senate committee proceedings.

The senator remains committed to her oversight responsibilities and will continue to champion the interests of her constituents and the broader national interest in subsequent sessions and through appropriate channels.
