Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has declared his full commitment to ensuring captain Lionel Messi participates in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating it would be beneficial for the sport as a whole.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Argentina’s upcoming international friendlies, Scaloni addressed ongoing speculation about the 38-year-old superstar’s participation in the tournament, which Argentina will defend as champions following their triumph in Qatar 2022.

“I’ll do everything possible to make sure he’s there,” Scaloni said. “I believe that, for the sake of football, he has to be there. It’s not me who decides. It’s up to him, his state of mind, his physical condition.”

Messi, who continues to perform at a high level with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, has yet to make a final decision on whether the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be his sixth and potentially final appearance on the global stage. Scaloni emphasized that the decision rests entirely with the player, while making his own position clear. “You already know where I stand,” he added. “He has earned the right to decide with peace of mind. We are in no hurry. Let’s hope he says yes.”

Scaloni also injected some light-hearted humor into the discussion, joking that he “won’t cry this time” when reflecting on his close relationship with Messi, a reference to past emotional moments.

The comments come as Argentina prepares for the World Cup with a strong core group from the 2022 squad, while integrating younger talent. Messi remains a central figure in the team’s plans, with Scaloni highlighting the positive impact of his leadership and presence on the squad.

Argentina will kick off their title defense in the summer of 2026, with the exact group draw and schedule to be confirmed in due course. The national team continues its preparations through a series of friendlies, giving fans and the coaching staff an opportunity to assess form and fitness.
