Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that Oyo State is on track to emerge as the undisputed tourism capital of South-West Nigeria, driven by strategic infrastructure development, a comprehensive 25-year Tourism Master Plan, enhanced security, and sustained policy continuity.
Speaking at the ongoing International Tourism Summit Oyo State 2026 (#ITSOyoState2026) held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Governor Makinde highlighted the state’s rich heritage, natural attractions, and deliberate investments as key factors positioning Oyo as a premier tourism destination.
“We have put in place major policies, actions, and economic enablers that will make Oyo State the hub of tourism in Southwest Nigeria and a major tourism destination in the country,” Governor Makinde stated. “Some of you here were part of the tour of the Oke-Ogun Zone. I hope you can now see why Oyo State is set to become the tourism capital of South West Nigeria in the coming years.”
Key initiatives underpinning this vision include: The inauguration of a 25-Year Tourism Master Plan Committee to provide a long-term blueprint for sustainable development.
Structured development frameworks for major sites, including Eleyele Lake and assets in the Oke-Ogun Zone. Significant infrastructure upgrades, such as the expansion of the Ibadan Airport to international standards and improved road networks connecting tourism sites.
Enhanced security across the state, creating a safe environment for visitors and investors. Partnerships with private investors, exemplified by the 15-year concession agreement for Bower’s Tower with SystemSpecs Limited.
Revitalization of cultural and historical attractions, leveraging Oyo’s over 160 tourist sites, including the Old Oyo National Park, Ado-Awaye Suspended Lake, Agodi Botanical Garden, and vibrant festivals like the Egungun Festival.
The Governor emphasized that tourism is not an afterthought but a strategic lever for economic development under the Omituntun 2.0 agenda. By institutionalizing policies and building enduring systems, the administration aims to generate revenue, create jobs, and foster sustainable livelihoods while showcasing Oyo State as a mature and competitive global tourism destination.
The three-day summit, themed “From Groundwork to Governance: Building Tourism That Endures,” brings together investors, policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to advance these goals and attract investments into the sector.
Governor Makinde called for continued collaboration and continuity, urging residents to support policies that will secure Oyo State’s position as South-West Nigeria’s tourism powerhouse.
