In a significant development amid ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s northeast, suspected Boko Haram insurgents have released 416 women and children abducted from the Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

The President of the Borno South Youth Alliance (BOSYA), Samaila Kaigama, confirmed the release, stating that the captives regained their freedom on Saturday, June 6, 2026. “BOSYA has secured the release of all the Ngoshe 416 women and children. They were released on 06 of June,” Kaigama said.

He expressed gratitude for the outcome, attributing it to the group’s sustained engagement, persistent advocacy, and long discussions with relevant parties. “We are happy and grateful that through our efforts, our persistent cries, and long discussions, the results are now being seen,” he added.

The abductions occurred following an attack in early March 2026, when insurgents overran Ngoshe, targeting a military base, burning vehicles, and kidnapping residents primarily women and children. BOSYA had previously acted as an intermediary, maintaining communication channels with the abductors and affected families, and had publicly highlighted the plight of the hostages in April.

Kaigama called on the Federal Government, Borno State Government, and local authorities to ensure proper screening and support for the released captives upon their return. Efforts to obtain comments from state officials were ongoing at the time of reporting.

This release brings relief to families and communities in Southern Borno after months of uncertainty, though the broader insurgency in the region continues to pose serious security concerns.
