The commercial motorcyclist has tragically lost his life after being swept away by floodwaters in Agbor, headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The incident occurred during heavy downpours that caused flash flooding in parts of the town. According to eyewitness accounts, the victim attempted to ride through a flooded section of road when he was overpowered by the strong currents and carried away. His body was later recovered by local residents and security operatives.
This sad event underscores the dangers of travelling on motorcycles during periods of intense rainfall and flooding, which have become recurrent in several communities across Delta State.
The Delta State Government commiserates with the family of the deceased and extends heartfelt condolences to them. The government also appeals to residents, particularly commercial motorcyclists and other road users, to exercise caution and avoid flooded routes.
"Residents are strongly advised to stay off roads that are already submerged and to monitor official weather updates," a government statement said. "We urge everyone to prioritize safety as we continue to experience this rainy season."
Relevant agencies have been directed to intensify sensitization efforts on flood safety and to fast-track drainage maintenance works in flood-prone areas.
