In a swift response to widespread concerns from parents and education stakeholders, the Federal Government has suspended the proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE).
The decision comes after significant public backlash against the planned adjustment that would have raised fees to a uniform N50,000 per candidate. The Federal Ministry of Education announced the withdrawal of the June 18, 2026 circular to allow for broader consultations and a thorough review with all relevant stakeholders before any final decision.
“No fee adjustment will take effect until comprehensive stakeholder engagement is completed,” the Ministry stated. This move underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive policymaking and ensuring education remains accessible, especially for students from less privileged backgrounds.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed the suspension, balancing the need to address rising operational costs for examination bodies (such as logistics, security, and technology) with the imperative of affordability.
The announcement has been widely welcomed across the country, with many describing it as a victory for Nigerian families amid ongoing economic challenges.
