Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has raised concerns over the current political environment in Nigeria, describing it as increasingly toxic and hostile to opposition parties and democratic pluralism.
Governor Makinde made the remarks while addressing political stakeholders and during recent engagements on the state of the nation’s democracy. He warned that the shrinking space for effective opposition poses a serious threat to the health of Nigeria’s democratic system.
“Across Nigeria today, we are witnessing a level of political concentration that should concern all of us,” Governor Makinde stated. He pointed to the dominance of a single party across most states, efforts to consolidate legislative control, and the internal crises plaguing opposition parties as indicators of a troubling trend.
The Governor emphasized that a weak or suppressed opposition is detrimental to good governance, accountability, and the overall progress of the country. He called for genuine political competition and the creation of an enabling environment where alternative voices can thrive without undue pressure or interference.
Despite the challenging climate, Governor Makinde expressed optimism about the future, noting that constructive opposition and coalition-building efforts could pave the way for a more balanced and vibrant democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while advocating for broader collaboration among opposition forces to strengthen democratic institutions.
Governor Seyi Makinde added: “Opposition politics is not just about winning elections; it is about ensuring that power is exercised responsibly and that the voices of the people are adequately represented. We must resist any slide towards a one-party dominance that stifles debate and innovation in governance.”
The Governor urged political actors across party lines to prioritize national interest, uphold democratic values, and work towards a more inclusive political landscape.
