Africa’s Largest Refinery Achieves Record Throughput, Boosts Exports, and Strengthens Regional Supply Role
The ongoing US-Iran conflict has disrupted global oil supply chains, elevated crude prices, and shifted market dynamics, creating significant opportunities for strategic refiners. Recent industry reports highlight how Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has benefited, posting record operational performance and expanding its influence as a reliable supplier of refined petroleum products.
The $20 billion Dangote Refinery in Lekki has consistently exceeded its nameplate capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), achieving over 700,000 bpd in performance tests. This surge aligns with heightened demand and sourcing shifts prompted by Middle East tensions, enabling increased uptake of Nigerian crude and higher volumes of exports.
“Periods of global energy volatility underscore the critical value of robust, large-scale refining infrastructure in Africa,” said a spokesperson for Dangote Industries Limited. “Dangote Refinery is delivering for Nigeria and the continent by maintaining high efficiency, competitive pricing, and reliable supply even as international markets face challenges.”
Operational Highlights: Record processing levels — Surpassing design capacity with ongoing optimization and expansion plans targeting up to 1.4 million bpd. Enhanced local crude sourcing Ramp-up in Nigerian crude purchases as global buyers adjust amid disruptions.
Expanded exports Increased shipments of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other products to African countries and international markets to help address supply gaps. Consumer benefits Continued efforts to moderate ex-depot prices for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in Nigeria.
The refinery’s sophisticated design and crude flexibility have allowed it to adapt swiftly, reinforcing Nigeria’s energy independence and reducing Africa’s dependence on imported fuels.
Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, stated: “This refinery was built for moments like these to provide stability, drive economic progress, and create value for Africa amid global uncertainties.”
Dangote Industries continues to pursue strategic growth initiatives, including potential regional projects, in line with its vision for African industrial self-sufficiency.
