Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of ethnic favoritism, political exclusion, and economic mismanagement. Speaking during a televised interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Lawal expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current government, stating that he would have resigned or been removed had he accepted any role in Tinubu’s cabinet.
Lawal, a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleged that the Tinubu government has been hijacked by Yoruba elites who, according to him, have sidelined their northern allies post-election. “The problem with the Yoruba is that when you support them and they win, they behave as if they have subdued you. They will not count your support,” Lawal said.
Lawal claimed that 99% of key government positions are occupied by Yoruba individuals, creating an exclusionary environment for non-Yoruba participants. He cited instances where meetings were conducted in Yoruba, leaving others alienated.
He criticized the removal of fuel subsidies, arguing that Nigerians have yet to see any benefits and that subsidies are still being paid covertly.
Lawal reiterated his belief that Labour Party candidate Peter Obi won the 2023 presidential election, alleging that the results were manipulated by the ruling APC.
Echoing concerns raised by other northern leaders, Lawal accused the Tinubu administration of neglecting infrastructure development in northern Nigeria, asserting that no visible federal projects are underway in the region.
Lawal’s remarks have intensified tensions within Nigeria’s political landscape, especially among former APC allies. His refusal to reconcile with President Tinubu underscores a deepening rift that could reshape opposition strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I thank God that I didn’t make the mistake of being in this government ab initio,” Lawal stated. “If I were in this government, I probably would have been sacked a long time ago, killed, or resigned.”
