The Nigeria Police Force has officially announced the removal of its long-serving and controversial Public Relations Officer, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, from his post at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. Effective immediately, Adejobi has been redeployed to the Delta State Police Command, where he will serve as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations.
Adejobi’s tenure as the public face of the Force was marked by intense scrutiny and widespread criticism. Appointed in April 2022, he quickly became a polarizing figure, accused of repressing dissent on social media, shielding institutional misconduct, and engaging in conduct unbecoming of a senior officer.
His removal follows mounting pressure from civil society and international observers, including a damning report by Chatham House and the National Bureau of Statistics, which ranked the Nigeria Police Force as the least trusted institution in the country. Nearly half of surveyed Nigerians expressed deep distrust in the police, citing impunity and lack of accountability.
Among the controversies surrounding Adejobi were allegations of personal misconduct, including retaliatory actions against individuals who accused him of abuse, and his alleged use of proxy media platforms to issue unofficial statements. His promotion to DCP earlier this year was met with public outrage, further intensifying calls for reform within the Force.
The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that Adejobi’s deputy will assume the role of Acting Force Public Relations Officer pending further appointments.
