The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced a significant decline in the average retail price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, offering a welcome reprieve to millions of Nigerian households grappling with rising living costs.
According to the latest LPG Price Watch report, the average cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas fell by 17.4% month-on-month, dropping from ₦14,375 in July to ₦11,875 in August 2025. This marks one of the steepest monthly declines in recent years. On a year-on-year basis, the price also decreased by 16.7%, compared to ₦14,261.57 recorded in August 2024.
Nigeria, Africa’s largest LPG consumer, has faced volatile cooking gas prices due to foreign exchange fluctuations, high transportation costs, and limited domestic supply. The recent drop is attributed to improved import conditions and seasonal adjustments, providing relief to households amid persistent food inflation and energy challenges.
The Federal Government’s “Decade of Gas” initiative, launched in 2021 to promote LPG adoption, had seen slowed momentum due to price surges in 2023 and early 2024. This latest price drop could reignite consumer confidence and support the transition away from traditional fuels like firewood and charcoal.
