The Nigerian Senate today commenced the official screening of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The screening exercise, held at the Senate Chamber of the National Assembly Complex, marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic trajectory. Professor Amupitan, a distinguished legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was nominated following the expiration of the tenure of outgoing INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
Professor Amupitan currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos and is widely recognized for his contributions to constitutional law, governance, and judicial reform. His nomination was unanimously endorsed by the Council of State, reflecting broad institutional confidence in his capacity to lead Nigeria’s electoral body with integrity and innovation.
Speaking ahead of the screening, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the importance of the role, stating that the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process hinges on the leadership of INEC. The Senate’s Director of Information, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, confirmed that the proceedings would be broadcast live to ensure transparency and public engagement.
The screening attracted national attention, with stakeholders from civil society, academia, and political circles expressing keen interest. Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi urged Amupitan to uphold his reputation by ensuring free and fair elections, while youth and regional groups such as NANS and Northern coalitions called for his swift confirmation.
If confirmed, Professor Amupitan will be tasked with overseeing preparations for upcoming elections, strengthening voter confidence, and advancing electoral reforms in line with global best practices.
