The Federal Government of Nigeria wishes to address the ongoing two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stating unequivocally that the strike is unjustified and unnecessary. The government has fulfilled every demand presented by the union and remains committed to constructive engagement aimed at strengthening the nation’s tertiary education system.
Speaking on Channels Television, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that the government has demonstrated sincerity and goodwill in its negotiations with ASUU. “I do not see reasons why they have gone on this strike,” he said. “I can tell you today that all demands of ASUU have been met”.
Despite these efforts, ASUU commenced a warning strike on October 13, 2025, disrupting academic activities nationwide. The Federal Government views this action as counterproductive and urges the union to reconsider its stance in the interest of students, parents, and the broader educational community.
The Ministry reiterates its commitment to dialogue and transparency, and calls on ASUU to return to the negotiation table. The government also reminds all stakeholders that the “no work, no pay” policy remains in effect for any unjustified industrial action.
The Federal Government remains resolute in its mission to elevate the quality of education in Nigeria and will continue to invest in infrastructure, staff welfare, and institutional autonomy. We appeal to ASUU to prioritize the future of Nigerian students and collaborate with the government to build a resilient and globally competitive university system.
