Popular Yoruba actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, widely known as Baba Ijesha, has officially regained his freedom following a ruling by the Court of Appeal that overturned his earlier conviction. The development marks the end of a high-profile case that has gripped Nollywood and the wider Nigerian public for over four years.
Baba Ijesha was initially sentenced by a Lagos High Court in July 2022 to 16 years in prison on charges of sexually assaulting a minor. His sentence was to run concurrently, amounting to five years behind bars. In April 2024, he approached the Court of Appeal to challenge the conviction, arguing that he had been set up and that the controversial CCTV footage was part of a “script” allegedly orchestrated by fellow comedian Damilola Adekoya, popularly known as Princess.
On November 14, 2025, the Court of Appeal cleared Baba Ijesha of all charges, leading to his immediate release. Fellow actor and close associate Yomi Fabiyi confirmed the news via Instagram, stating: “You are now officially free and out. Baba Ijesha is not just back but better. I am also happy you were cleared by the Appeal Court of ever having sex or defiling any child or minor.”
The announcement sparked jubilation among supporters and colleagues in Nollywood. Broadcaster and film producer Kola Olotu also confirmed the release, sharing celebratory messages on social media. Videos circulating online show Baba Ijesha expressing relief and gratitude, noting that he intends to rest and reconnect with his supporters.
Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, is a veteran Yoruba comic actor with decades of contributions to Nollywood. His career has been marked by memorable performances in comedy and drama, making him a household name in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
