Mascot Uzor Kalu, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leader in Abia State and former governorship candidate, has publicly addressed his decision not to challenge the victory of Governor Alex Otti in the 2023 elections. In a statement released to the press, Kalu emphasized that his choice was rooted in respect for the democratic process and the will of the people.

“I chose not to challenge Governor Otti’s victory because I believe the outcome reflected the wishes of Abia citizens,” Kalu stated. “Litigation would have only prolonged political tension and distracted from the urgent need for development in our state.”

Kalu’s remarks come amid speculation from political observers and party loyalists who had expected a legal contest following the Labour Party’s sweeping win in Abia. His decision has been praised by some as a gesture of political maturity and a call for unity.

Kalu urged fellow politicians to prioritize governance over rivalry, stating that the people of Abia deserve peace, progress, and purposeful leadership.

“We must move beyond party lines and work together to uplift Abia. The election is over; now is the time to build,” he added.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to serving the state in any capacity and supporting initiatives that promote economic growth, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development.

While Kalu’s decision has cooled post-election tensions, political analysts suggest that the 2027 governorship race may reignite competition between APC and Labour Party stalwarts. Kalu has not ruled out future political ambitions but insists that his current focus is on community engagement and policy advocacy.
