A devastating fuel tanker explosion rocked the bustling streets of Kano earlier today, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives and leaving several others injured. The incident, which occurred in the densely populated Hotoro area along the Maiduguri Road, has prompted an immediate response from local authorities and emergency services.
According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports from the Kano State Fire Service, the explosion happened around 10:30 AM local time when a tanker transporting premium motor spirit (PMS) lost control, overturned, and ignited.
The blast sent shockwaves through nearby residences and businesses, causing widespread panic and property damage estimated in the millions of naira. The three deceased individuals, whose identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, included the tanker driver and two passersby caught in the inferno.
Emergency responders, including teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), arrived swiftly at the scene to contain the fire and provide medical aid.
At least five injured victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, where they are receiving treatment for burns and other trauma. Traffic in the area was diverted for several hours as cleanup operations commenced, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
"This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers associated with road transportation of hazardous materials in our urban centers," said Alhaji Ibrahim Musa, Spokesperson for the Kano State Government. The Kano State Government has announced the formation of a task force to review safety protocols for fuel transportation, including mandatory vehicle inspections and driver training programs.
