The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, today reaffirmed the historical and legal supremacy of the Oyo throne in granting chieftaincy titles that encompass all of Yorubaland. This declaration underscores the throne's role as the central coordinator of Yoruba authority, a position rooted in centuries of tradition.
During a grand ceremony at the Oyo Palace, Oba Owoade conferred the prestigious title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, and Obaloyin of Yorubaland on Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari. Attendees from across Nigeria and beyond witnessed the event, which highlighted the throne's commitment to unity and cultural integrity.
Oba Owoade stated, "The authority to bestow chieftaincy titles bearing the name 'Yorubaland' rests solely with the throne of Oyo." He explained that this power draws from historical precedents, colonial records recognizing Oyo as the largest province in Southern Nigeria by 1914, and post-independence Supreme Court rulings. The Alaafin emphasized that such titles demand service, loyalty, and humility from recipients to foster cohesion among the Yoruba people.
This announcement addresses recent discussions on traditional leadership, including a reconciliation with the Ooni of Ife to form a council promoting Yoruba unity. Oba Owoade urged all leaders to respect these boundaries and avoid actions that could fragment the Yoruba heritage.
The ceremony marks a pivotal moment in preserving Yoruba customs amid modern challenges. The Alaafin calls on titleholders to prioritize the collective good over individual interests.
