Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) announced that she is suspending her campaign for Governor of New York and will not seek reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026.

Stefanik, who launched her bid for governor in November 2025 with strong support from President Donald Trump, cited a desire to focus on her family and explore new opportunities outside of elected office as key factors in her decision. Despite confidence in her ability to win the Republican primary, Stefanik emphasized that the timing was right to step back from the race.

"I am incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from New Yorkers across the state and from President Trump, whose endorsement cleared the path for what could have been a historic campaign," said Stefanik. "However, after much reflection and conversation with my family, I have decided to suspend my gubernatorial bid and not pursue reelection to Congress.

Serving the people of New York's 21st District has been the honor of my life, and I am proud of the conservative victories we've achieved together—from strengthening our national security to fighting for Upstate families and small businesses."

Stefanik's withdrawal leaves Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman as the leading Republican candidate in the gubernatorial primary. She expressed optimism about the future of the Republican Party in New York and pledged to support efforts to reclaim the governor's mansion from Democratic control under Governor Kathy Hochul.

During her tenure in Congress, Stefanik has risen to prominence as a key ally of President Trump, serving as House Republican Conference Chair and playing a pivotal role in major legislative battles. Her decision marks the end of a decade-long career in the House, where she represented a vast district spanning from the Adirondacks to the Canadian border.

Stefanik and her family look forward to new chapters ahead, including potential roles in the private sector or continued advocacy for conservative causes.
