Senate President Godswill Akpabio today urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the recent directive that withdraws police orderlies from members of the National Assembly. He made this appeal during the joint session where President Tinubu presented the 2026 budget proposal. Akpabio highlighted growing safety concerns among lawmakers.

In his address, Akpabio expressed the fears of his colleagues. He stated that the withdrawal exposes them to significant risks. "As we direct the security agencies to withdraw policemen from critical areas, some of the National Assembly said I should let you know they may not be able to go home today," Akpabio said. He added, "On that note, we plead with Mr President for a review of the decision."

The directive originated from President Tinubu's order on November 23, 2025. It aims to redeploy police officers to core duties in insecure areas. Very Important Persons must now seek protection from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. President Tinubu reaffirmed this policy on December 10, emphasizing the need to avoid exposing individuals to danger while reallocating resources.

However lawmakers argue that the move leaves them vulnerable. They often travel to constituencies amid rising insecurity. Akpabio stressed the need for fairness in implementation. Some colleagues noted selective enforcement, where ministers and others retain security details. This disparity raises questions about equal protection for elected officials.

The appeal underscores broader national security challenges. Lawmakers play a vital role in governance and community engagement. Without adequate protection, they may limit visits to their areas, hindering representation. Akpabio called for a balanced approach that safeguards both public safety and officials' well-being.

President Tinubu has not yet responded publicly to the appeal. The National Assembly awaits further dialogue on this matter.

The Senate remains committed to supporting policies that enhance Nigeria's security and economic stability. We urge all stakeholders to prioritize collaborative solutions.
