The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating a horrific mass shooting that occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Bekkersdal township, approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Johannesburg. At least 10 people were killed and another 10 wounded when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a local tavern and in surrounding streets.
The incident unfolded around 01:00 local time when approximately 12 assailants arrived in two vehicles at an informal bar in the impoverished area near major gold mines. The gunmen entered the premises and began shooting indiscriminately at patrons before fleeing the scene, continuing to fire randomly at individuals in the streets. Among the victims was a driver from an online car-hailing service who was waiting outside the tavern.
"Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen," stated a SAPS spokesperson in an initial briefing. Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana confirmed to local media that the deceased include civilians from various backgrounds, with no immediate motive identified for the attack. The wounded have been transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment, and their conditions range from stable to critical.
SAPS has launched an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators, deploying specialized units and appealing to the public for any information that could lead to their arrest.
"We are committed to bringing those responsible to justice and ensuring the safety of our communities," said Brigadier Brenda Muridili, Gauteng Province police spokesperson. "This senseless act of violence will not be tolerated, and we urge anyone with details about the suspects or the vehicles involved to come forward immediately."
This tragedy marks the second mass shooting in South Africa this month, following a similar incident on December 6 near Pretoria, where gunmen stormed a hostel and killed at least 12 people, including a three-year-old child. South Africa continues to grapple with one of the world's highest murder rates, driven by factors such as gang violence, organized crime, and competition among informal businesses.
The SAPS is working closely with local authorities and community leaders to provide support to affected families and enhance security measures in the area. Counseling services are being made available to survivors and witnesses.
