MTV Networks, a division of Paramount Global, today officially confirmed the shutdown of its 24-hour music channels, effective January 1, 2026. The final broadcast concluded poignantly with "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles – the same iconic track that launched MTV's inaugural airing on August 1, 1981, symbolizing the channel's revolutionary impact on music and pop culture.
This decision comes as consumer viewing habits have dramatically shifted toward on demand streaming platforms. Viewers increasingly opt for personalized experiences, such as selecting specific music videos on YouTube, rather than tuning into scheduled programming on channels like MTV Base.
"We've witnessed a profound evolution in how fans engage with music content," said Chris McCarthy, President and CEO of MTV Entertainment Group. "While it's bittersweet to close this chapter, MTV's spirit of innovation lives on through our digital platforms, where we continue to connect artists and audiences in new, exciting ways."
MTV's 24-hour music channels pioneered the music video format, transforming the industry by providing a visual platform for artists and introducing generations to groundbreaking music. From the early days of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to the rise of hip-hop and alternative rock, MTV became a cultural touchstone, influencing fashion, language, and global trends.
Over the decades, the network expanded to include reality programming, awards shows like the VMAs, and social initiatives, but its core music video roots remained a staple until now.
As part of the transition, MTV encourages fans to explore its robust online presence, including the MTV YouTube channel, apps, and social media, where curated playlists, live performances, and exclusive content will continue to thrive. Archived music videos and historical broadcasts will also be made available through Paramount+ and other streaming services.
"MTV didn't just play music videos; it created moments that defined eras," added McCarthy. "We're grateful to our viewers, artists, and partners for over four decades of unforgettable experiences. This isn't goodbye – it's a remix."
