Prominent human rights activist, journalist, and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has boldly asserted that up to 90% of current members of Nigeria's National Assembly would fail to retain their positions if the country's elections were conducted with full transparency and credibility.

Sowore made the striking claim during an appearance on Channels Television's The Morning Brief on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, amid ongoing national debate over proposed amendments to the Electoral Act 2022.

The activist specifically criticized efforts to retain or reinstate manual collation of election results, arguing that such provisions undermine genuine electoral integrity and protect incumbent politicians from accountability.

“They are afraid of transparent elections because once elections become truly transparent, 90 per cent of those sitting in the National Assembly and even those occupying other elected offices, including the presidency will not be there,” Sowore stated.

He further accused the political class of deliberately weakening electoral reforms to safeguard their power, emphasizing that credible, technology-driven processes such as full electronic transmission of results from polling units would expose widespread irregularities and lead to a major overhaul of Nigeria's leadership.

Sowore's comments come in the context of recent protests at the National Assembly, where citizens, including the activist himself, rallied against changes perceived as opening doors to manipulation in the 2027 general elections.

He has consistently advocated for comprehensive electoral reforms, including real-time electronic transmission and broader use of technology to eliminate rigging.

As a vocal critic of systemic corruption and electoral malpractice, Sowore founder of the #RevolutionNow movement and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) continues to mobilize public support for genuine democratic change in Nigeria.
