In the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, now in its second week, explosions were reported across central Israel late on March 8 into March 9, 2026, after Iranian ballistic missiles were detected inbound toward Israeli territory.

Israeli air defense systems, including the Iron Dome and other multilayered interceptors, activated nationwide as sirens blared in major population centers such as Tel Aviv, Petah Tikva, and surrounding areas in central Israel.

Multiple impact sites were confirmed, with debris and fragments from intercepted or failed missiles causing damage to civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings and vehicles.

Emergency services, including Magen David Adom (MDA), reported injuries from the latest salvo. At least six civilians were wounded in central Israel, some moderately from shrapnel, flying debris, or secondary effects such as rock fragments from missile impacts.

One incident involved a fragment from an Iranian missile striking a populated area, leading to on-site treatment and hospital evacuations.

No fatalities were immediately reported from the most recent barrage, though cumulative casualties from Iranian attacks since late February exceed a dozen deaths and thousands injured.

The Iranian missile launches come amid ongoing joint U.S.-Israeli military operations targeting Iranian infrastructure, including ballistic missile sites, launchers, oil facilities, and command structures.

Reports indicate Iran has fired multiple barrages often in smaller salvos of single or few missiles despite significant degradation of its capabilities following hundreds of strikes on its territory.

Israeli officials have assessed that over 300 Iranian missile launchers have been destroyed, contributing to a sharp decline in the volume of attacks compared to the conflict's early days.

The latest detections and interceptions follow Iran's retaliation for the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes that began on February 28, 2026, which eliminated key Iranian leadership figures and targeted nuclear and military assets.

Iran has continued sporadic missile and drone strikes on Israel and U.S. regional allies, even as its new leadership consolidates following the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader.

Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that operations continue to focus on degrading Iran's remaining ballistic missile program, including underground storage sites, to prevent further threats to civilian populations. Air raid warnings and shelter directives remain in effect across central and southern Israel.

International observers note the risk of broader regional escalation, with attacks also reported on U.S. bases and Gulf states. Both sides have shown no immediate signs of de-escalation.
