Manchester United produced a dominant second-half display to defeat top-four rivals Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford this evening, moving three points clear in the Premier League standings and taking a significant step towards Champions League qualification.
The match remained goalless at half-time, but United exploded into life after the break.
Casemiro broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute with a powerful near-post header from a Bruno Fernandes corner. Aston Villa equalised 11 minutes later when Ross Barkley making his first Premier League start in 14 months fired home from 12 yards.
United’s response was emphatic. Captain Bruno Fernandes, who registered two assists on the night to reach 16 Premier League assists this season (surpassing David Beckham’s club record from 1999-2000), produced a sublime through ball for Matheus Cunha to restore the lead in the 71st minute.
Substitute Benjamin Sesko then sealed the three points in the 81st minute with a smart deflected finish on the turn.
Interim manager Michael Carrick, now with seven wins in nine games since taking charge, praised his side’s character.
“The lads showed real quality and resilience,” said Carrick. “To respond the way we did after they equalised was excellent. This is a massive three points against a direct rival and keeps us firmly in the conversation for the top four.”
Fernandes added: “These are the big games we live for. Old Trafford was rocking, and everyone contributed. We’re all pulling in the same direction getting Manchester United back where we belong in the Champions League.”
The victory lifts United into a stronger position in third place, while Villa now on the back of three straight league defeats drop to fifth.
