The Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ahmed Sanusi, has disclosed that air conditioning units have been installed in detention facilities across the command as part of efforts to promote the humane and dignified treatment of suspects.
Speaking on Wednesday, CP Sanusi emphasized his commitment to upholding human rights within the police detention system. He stated that the initiative reflects a broader dedication to making police cells more habitable, particularly in the challenging climate of the Federal Capital Territory.
“To the extent to which I have been upholding human rights, even my cells have air conditioners. I make sure I install air conditioners for the suspects, and when they go out, they are even happier, and they talk a lot about it,” the FCT CP declared.
He added that steps have been taken to improve the conditions in detention facilities, noting, “That is why I have taken steps to make our cells more habitable, including installing air conditioners.”
The move is aimed at ensuring that suspects held in police custody are treated with respect and dignity while their cases are being processed, aligning with constitutional provisions and international standards on the rights of persons in detention.
CP Sanusi’s administration has prioritized welfare improvements in police facilities as part of a people-oriented policing strategy that balances effective law enforcement with respect for fundamental human rights.
The FCT Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and the protection of the rights of all individuals, whether victims, witnesses, or suspects.
