Professor Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State.

In a resignation letter dated May 31, 2026, addressed to the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Prof. Obasanjo cited ongoing disrespect, rejection, exclusion, and unfair treatment by the party’s leadership in the state as the primary reasons for her decision. She had recently contested for the APC governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections but suspended her aspiration in favor of a consensus arrangement.

“I joined the APC with high hopes and a commitment to contribute to the development of Ogun State and Nigeria at large,” Prof. Obasanjo stated in the letter. “However, the persistent disrespect, maltreatment, and lack of regard for my contributions and those of my supporters have made it untenable for me to continue in the party.”

Prof. Obasanjo, a former Ogun State Commissioner for Health (2003–2007), had re-entered active partisan politics in January 2026 after over 15 years away, seeking to leverage her experience in public service and governance. Her exit highlights internal tensions within the Ogun APC ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race.

She expressed gratitude to party members who supported her during her brief time in the APC and wished the party well in its future endeavors. Prof. Obasanjo has not indicated her next political move at this time.
