The Rivers State Police Command has suspended a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) over allegations of extortion and misconduct involving the sum of N500,000.

The suspension follows reports and complaints circulating on social media and from a rights activist, alleging that the DPO extorted N500,000 from an individual who was arrested and detained at the station.

In a swift response to the allegations, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, ordered the immediate removal and suspension of the affected DPO pending a full investigation into the matter. The command emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and unprofessional conduct among its officers.

“The Rivers State Police Command is committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. Any officer found culpable in acts of extortion or abuse of office will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the Police Act and other relevant laws,” a police spokesperson stated.

The command has assured the public that a thorough and transparent investigation is underway. Members of the public with additional information are encouraged to come forward to assist in the probe.

This development is part of ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to restore public confidence in the institution and weed out corrupt elements within the system.
