Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, has strongly urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign from office, describing his administration’s performance as a monumental failure in governance.

In a statement issued today, Obi drew inspiration from the recent resignation announcement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, highlighting it as a commendable example of political accountability and leadership integrity. Obi emphasized that leaders must prioritize the welfare of citizens and step aside when they can no longer deliver on their mandate.

“Public office is a sacred trust. When leaders fail to deliver on promises and the sufferings of the people intensify, the honorable path is to resign,” Obi stated. He pointed to persistent challenges including economic hardship, insecurity, frequent power grid collapses, high inflation, and deepening poverty under the current administration issues he noted have worsened despite campaign assurances on electricity, security, and anti-corruption efforts.

Obi recalled that President Tinubu himself had previously called for the resignation of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 over similar governance concerns. He urged Tinubu to demonstrate the same standard of accountability he once demanded of others.

“I therefore join Nigerians of goodwill in calling for the resignation of the President over monumental failure in governance,” Obi added.

The NDC presidential candidate stressed that true leadership requires leaders to put the nation first, especially amid widespread public discontent. He called on all well-meaning Nigerians to demand better governance and hold leaders responsible for their actions.
