The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, has concluded a two-day official visit to Anambra State, reinforcing the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic processes ahead of the gubernatorial election scheduled for November 8, 2025.
During his visit, Dr. Montgomery met with key stakeholders including Governor Charles Soludo, gubernatorial candidates, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the State Commissioner of Police, and representatives from civil society organizations. Discussions focused on technical and logistical preparations for the upcoming election, with particular attention to securing 5,720 polling units, improving voter turnout, and ensuring safety across the state’s 21 local government areas.
In a statement issued by the British High Commission in Abuja, Dr. Montgomery emphasized the importance of peaceful, transparent, and credible elections, urging all parties to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law. “The UK does not endorse any candidate or political party. Our support is for the electoral process itself,” he stated.
The High Commissioner also highlighted the role of civil society and youth engagement in fostering democratic participation. He encouraged eligible voters to exercise their rights and participate peacefully in the election, noting that the UK will continue to work with Nigerian institutions to strengthen electoral integrity.
