A severe winter storm battered the Midwest over the weekend, leading to widespread disruptions including over 1,400 flight cancellations and a massive 45-vehicle pileup. The storm, which struck following Thanksgiving celebrations, created hazardous conditions across states like Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

Authorities reported that Chicago O'Hare International Airport bore the brunt of the aviation chaos, with more than 930 flights canceled and 750 delayed as snow and ice grounded operations Chicago Midway Airport also faced significant impacts, with 187 cancellations.

Nationwide, airlines scrambled to manage the fallout, stranding thousands of post-holiday travelers. The Federal Aviation Administration cited deicing and visibility issues as primary causes, urging passengers to check flight statuses.

On the roads, emergency responders handled a chaotic 45-car crash on westbound Interstate 70 near Terre Haute, Indiana. The incident involved passenger vehicles, SUVs, and semi-trucks, halting traffic for hours amid blowing snow and slick surfaces.

Officials confirmed no serious injuries, but described it as one of the largest wrecks in recent memory. Indiana State Police closed sections of the highway to clear debris and investigate, attributing the pileup to reduced visibility and speeding in poor conditions.

The National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings, forecasting additional snowfall through Sunday in parts of the Great Lakes region. Local governments activated snow removal crews and salt trucks, while schools and events canceled activities. Governors in affected states encouraged residents to avoid travel and prepare for potential power outages.
