In a landmark ruling, a Rivers State High Court has sentenced Damian Okoligwe, a 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), to death by hanging for the brutal murder and dismemberment of his girlfriend, Justina Otuene, a 300-level Biochemistry student at the same institution.
The court, presided over by Justice Sika Aprioku, found Okoligwe guilty after the prosecution successfully proved the charges of murder beyond reasonable doubt. The incident occurred on October 20, 2023, at Okoligwe's apartment in Mgbupba, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, where he allegedly killed Otuene and attempted to dismember her body in a bid to conceal the crime.
According to court proceedings, Okoligwe was arrested shortly after the murder when hotel staff discovered human remains in his possession while he was attempting to dispose of them. The prosecution presented compelling evidence, including witness testimonies and forensic details, which established Okoligwe's direct involvement in the heinous act.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Aprioku emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating that the evidence clearly demonstrated premeditation and a lack of remorse on the part of the defendant. The court ordered that Okoligwe be hanged until death, underscoring the judiciary's commitment to upholding justice and deterring similar crimes in society.
The family of the late Justina Otuene expressed relief at the verdict, hoping it brings closure and allows her soul to rest in peace. "This judgment is a step towards justice for our beloved Justina," said a family spokesperson.
This case has sparked widespread discussions on campus safety, gender-based violence, and the need for stronger measures to protect students in Nigerian universities. Authorities urge anyone with information on similar incidents to come forward to aid in preventing future tragedies.
