Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, today confirmed his plans to run for President in the 2027 elections. He firmly stated that he will not accept a position as anyone's vice president.
Obi made this announcement during an X Spaces conversation on Sunday night. He emphasized his experience and vision for Nigeria. "I am not travelling round the world to learn governance to be Vice President," Obi said. "I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President. Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers.”
This declaration comes amid reports of Obi's plans to leave the Labour Party due to its ongoing leadership crisis. He intends to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to pursue his presidential ambitions. The Labour Party faces division between factions led by Julius Abure and Senator Nenadi Usman, with the Independent National Electoral Commission yet to recognize either side.
Obi highlighted his commitment to putting Nigeria first. He has consulted with key stakeholders, including Abia State Governor Alex Otti and lawmakers, about his move. The ADC is part of a broader coalition aiming to challenge the All Progressives Congress in 2027, involving figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and others.
However internal debates over zoning and leadership roles have arisen within the coalition. Obi rejects any suggestion of running as vice president, focusing instead on securing the top position to implement his ideas for national turnaround.
Supporters, including the Obidient Movement, rally behind Obi. They cite his strong performance in the 2023 elections as evidence of his broad appeal.
Peter Obi calls on Nigerians to join him in building a better future. More details on his campaign will follow in the coming months.
