The Department of State Services (DSS) re-arraigned activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore before the Federal High Court in Abuja on January 19, 2026, on amended charges related to an alleged anti-President Bola Tinubu social media post.
The Federal Government has formally dropped all charges against Meta Platforms Inc. and X Corporation, leaving Sowore as the sole defendant in the cybercrime case.
Justice Mohammed Umar presided over the proceedings, where the prosecution amended the charges under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024, alleging that Sowore's posts constituted cyberstalking.
Sowore pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge, which stems from social media content purportedly labeling President Tinubu as a "criminal."
The court struck out Meta and X as co-defendants following a request by DSS counsel Akinlolu Kehinde, marking a significant development in the ongoing case. This action highlights evolving approaches to cybercrime prosecutions involving social media platforms in Nigeria.
