The Benue State Police Command confirms a violent clash between rival cult gangs that claimed eight lives in a supremacy battle. Authorities responded swiftly to restore order and arrest suspects.

The incident began on Wednesday in Jato Aka, within the Kwande Local Government Area. Two rival cult groups engaged in a fierce confrontation, leading to two immediate deaths. Fighters used firearms and machetes during the attack. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the groups vied for control. However, the violence did not stop there.

The conflict quickly spread to Makurdi and surrounding areas, including Wurukum. Additional clashes occurred in at least four local government areas. Gunmen targeted opponents in coordinated assaults, resulting in more casualties.

In total, eight individuals lost their lives from gunshot wounds sustained at close range. Several others suffered injuries and now receive treatment in local hospitals. The death toll increased as fighting persisted into the evening.

Police teams mobilized rapidly to contain the situation. Officers arrested eight suspects connected to the cults. They also recovered various weapons during targeted raids.

Furthermore, security patrols intensified in the affected zones to deter further incidents. Investigations continue, and officials expect additional arrests soon.

Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer for Benue State Command, stated, "We condemn this senseless violence that disrupts our communities. Our forces acted decisively to protect lives and property. We urge residents to report suspicious activities and avoid vigilante actions. Cultism has no place in Benue, and we commit to eradicating it through ongoing operations."

The clash highlights persistent challenges with cult activities in the region. Residents fled their homes amid the turmoil, and businesses closed temporarily. Communities now demand stronger preventive measures.

In response, the police encourage youth programs and education to discourage cult recruitment. Leaders also call for unity to combat such threats.

The Benue State Police Command assures the public of enhanced security. Officers remain vigilant to prevent escalations. Anyone with information should contact the nearest police station.
