The Rivers State House of Assembly today commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct and violations of the Nigerian Constitution..This action underscores the Assembly's commitment to upholding democratic principles and accountability in governance.

During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, Majority Leader Major Jack presented the impeachment notice.

Twenty-six lawmakers signed the document, reflecting a strong consensus within the 32-member House. The notice accuses the Governor and his deputy of actions that undermine the state's democratic processes and constitutional order.

Speaker Amaewhule emphasized the gravity of the situation. "We take this step to protect the interests of Rivers State residents and ensure that leadership adheres to the rule of law," he stated.

The Assembly plans to serve the notice on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, as required by legislative procedures. Following service, the Governor will have an opportunity to respond to the charges.

This development follows ongoing political tensions in the state, including previous disputes involving former Governor Nyesom Wike. The Assembly previously attempted impeachment proceedings against Fubara, which ended amid legal challenges. Lawmakers assert that recent actions by the Governor necessitate this renewed effort to address alleged breaches.

The Rivers State House of Assembly calls on all residents to remain calm and support peaceful democratic processes. The House remains dedicated to serving the people and advancing the state's development agenda.
